Plans for a new electric shop are underway, the Hillsboro City Council heard Tuesday evening.
City Administrator Steve Garrett presented plans drawn by Kermit Dirksen, city building inspector, for a potential new electric shop. The new shop would include a street shop with room inside to park city vehicles, Garrett said.
The cost of the new building would be approximately $97,000.
"Insurance funds should cover that," Garrett said.
Council member Mike Padgett questioned the quality of the building — would that amount pay for everything, or just a shell for the structure?
"You can easily build a building for that," said council member Wendell Dirks.
The City Council approved a housing rehab/demolition plan that gives funds to low- to moderate-income families living in a designated area of the city. Hillsboro began this revitalization project last year.
According to the plan, at least two homes that are deemed to be a "blight" can be demolished, if the owner agrees to it.
In other city business:
— The city allocated $1,500 to the Convention and Visitors Board. The money comes out of the CVB's annual budget, which is $8,500.
— While renewing its insurance policy, the city considered cutting back coverage on some older city vehicles to save money.
Currently, all city vehicles have a $150 deductible for comprehensive and a $250 deductible for collision. Mayor Delores Dalke questioned the need for that much coverage on vehicles that are more than ten years old.
