County commissioners answer questions at chamber lunch
Real Estate Specialists will host open house Friday afternoon
Marion County Commissioners Bob Hein and Howard Collett attended the monthly luncheon Wednesday of Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce.
Hillsboro mayor Delores Dalke asked the commissioners about voting to delay an application for a recycling grant. Collett said that under the current law, county solid waste funds could not be used for recycling, and that the program would have had to stand on its own.
"We would have lost out," said Dalke. "The proposal was just for paper goods, and we would have lost all the other recycling."
Hillsboro's current recycling program includes curbside pick-up of cardboard, and recycling of glass, paper, and plastics at the volunteer-staffed recycling center
The commissioners said the transfer station was working well, and that the process for covering the old landfill would get underway as soon as an engineering plan was created.
"We're in a lot better position than we were last year," said Collett.
The immediate cost of the project would be approximately $300,000, with another t$300,000 projected over the next 30 years.
Hein said that the commissioners would discuss the liquor-by-the-drink question at their next meeting, and if the resolution passes, it would be on the ballot at the general election in November.
Megan Kilgore, director of the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce, announced that Real Estate Specialists would have an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday. Beginning the end of March, Ampride will be serving pizza.
The next chamber of commerce luncheon will be at noon April 7 at the Hillsboro Community Building.
The community is encouraged to attend. Cost for lunch is $5. Contact the chamber for more information.
