County will purchase lots from Marion city for new jail

Marion County Commission decided Monday that it would rather buy Marion city lots for a new jail facility and let the city worry about the utilities instead of receiving the lots for free and having to meet the city's requirements for the infrastructure.
The commission responded to a letter from Marion City Administrator David Mayfield regarding the offers made by the council for several acres located on the southwest corner of the city's industrial park.
Commissioner Dan Holub said he would plan to attend the city council meeting Monday to talk with the council.
Holub said he was irritated that the county did not qualify for free lots and infrastructure.
The purchase was approved with the contingency that the bond issue for the new jail facility is approved by voters in November.
The price of the lots is $80,000.
In other business:
— The commission signed an agreement with Marion County Improvement District #2 to purchase the district's maintenance building at Marion County Lake for $25,000. The district constructed a new maintenance building.
The commission also approved the termination of the land lease where the district's older maintenance building was located.
— The solid waste fees assessment was approved for another year. The charges will remain the same with most residents paying $81 per year and most commercial businesses paying $132.
— Transfer station manager Rollin Schmidt requested and received a five-minute executive session for personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
— The commission entered into a 90-minute executive session to review department head evaluations. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.
The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday at the courthouse.
