Couple moves from Meade to open Hillsboro construction business
When snow hits the ground it usually means time off for construction workers.
But once the icy stuff thaws, it's back to work for Willard Glasgow and Glasgow Construction.
Glasgow Construction is a new business that's been in Hillsboro since last fall. The owner, Willard Glasgow, moved to town in December with his wife, June.
The Glasgows are originally from Fredonia, but they've spent the last 12 years living out in western Kansas in the town of Meade. Now that they're in Hillsboro, they're closer to their hometown — and their daughter, Dawn. She lives in Hillsboro with her husband, Kory.
Although having family in Hillsboro wasn't the overriding reason the Glasgows moved to town, it was a factor, they said. They like living closer to Fredonia, since Meade was a five-hour drive away.
Willard Glasgow has done construction work part-time for awhile, he said. Ten years ago he decided to start his own business.
Glasgow's services aren't just for construction — they're for smaller jobs too, from fixing a leaky faucet to doing electrical work. He'll do "anything anybody wants done," Glasgow said.
That also includes larger projects such as remodeling jobs, additions, or even building an entire house, he said.
Right now Glasgow has a couple local employees and two part-time high school students that work for him. They'll be put to work full-time this summer, he said.
Moving to Hillsboro has been a bonus for Glasgow's wife, June, who works with Heartland SHARE, a nonprofit organization that gives discounted food to volunteers. She travels a lot for her job, and being more centrally located — especially closer to Wichita — is better for her work, she said.
The Glasgows hope to get involved in their new community. Willard was a member of the city council in Meade.
