Dance studio gets new domain

After years of practicing in the high school and the city building, a local dance studio will finally have its very own abode.

Vicky's School of Dance, owned by Hillsboro resident Vicky Mohn, is moving to 107 W. Grand. The building is just east of Daylight Donuts.

The building, owned by Paul Epp, originally contained four offices. Now it's being remodeled into one large space, complete with a mirrored wall and ballet bar.

Mohn is excited about having her own space. She'd considered renting the space before.

"We had looked at that one years ago," she said.

Mohn has been operating the dance school for 20 years, she said. When she and her family moved to Hillsboro 15 years ago, she started holding classes in the former fitness center, which was later transformed into a post office.

When that space wasn't available, Mohn's classes practiced in the city building and on the Hillsboro High School auditorium stage. And when the stage was occupied, classes moved into a classroom.

Mohn and her husband, Gordon, looked nearly every year for a building suitable for the dance school. This year, things just fell into place.

Right now, the remodeling projects are in full swing. On the back wall, mirrors will cover the surface, and a long ballet bar will stretch across the west wall.

Before, Mohn's ballet students had to use folding chairs. Now they'll have a real bar.

"I think I will do more bar work," she said.

The floor will be Masonite, which is the ideal surface for dancers, Mohn said.

"That's what we danced on in the high school auditorium," she said.

Classes start Sept. 2, and the instructor hopes that all the remodeling work will be complete by then. But if it isn't, Mohn has a "Plan B" — that's back at school, she said.

Since Mohn's classes are in the evenings and after school, the space will be free during the daytime. Mohn hopes that aerobics classes will take advantage of the space that's perfect for a yoga or aerobics session.
