Andrew C. David

Andrew Christian David, 87, of Durham, died Aug. 8, 2004, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Born Nov. 6, 1916, northwest of Durham, he was the son of Jacob E. and Leah (Lorenz) David.

He was a farmer and affiliated with First Baptist Church of Durham.

Survivors include brother Lester and his wife Alvina David of Sunapee, N.H., and Elma David of rural Durham.

Graveside services are today at 2 p.m. at Durham Baptist Cemetery in rural Durham.

A memorial fund has been established with First Baptist Church of Durham.

Eldon A. Goertzen

Eldon A. Goertzen, 82, of Hesston died Aug. 7, 2004, at Schowalter Villa.

Born July 28, 1922, in Newton, he was the son of Dan S. and Pauline (Schmidt) Goertzen.

On April 26, 1944, he married Susie Flaming at Alexanderwohl Church near Goessel. She survives.

He lived in the Goessel area until his marriage when he moved to rural Walton. He was a farmer and a member of Tabor Mennonite Church. He moved to Hesston in 1998.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Survivors include his wife of Hesston; son, Stanley Goertzen of rural Walton; daughter, Brenda Buller of rural Hillsboro; sister, Gladys Krause of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held Wednesday at Tabor Mennonite Church near Goessel with Pastors Corey Miller and Karen Andres officiating. Burial was at Tabor Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established at Tabor Mennonite Church.

Francis Groening

Francis J. Groening, 89, died Aug. 8, 2004, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center Long Term Care Unit.

Born July 10, 1915, in Lehigh, he was the son of Frank and Anna (Fleming) Groening.

On Nov. 25, 1943, he married Martha Wiens at Hillsboro. She died in 1992.

He was in the sand and gravel business and a member of Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Connie Hendrickson of Hillsboro, Sheryl McDaniel of Holton, and Gala Liebelt of Satanta; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, with Pastor Dave Plett officiating.

Burial will be in Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with Celebrate Hope.

Marlene R. Hodge

Marlene R. Hodge, 48, of Fresno, Calif., died July 28, 2004, in Fresno.

She was born Dec. 7, 1945, in Hillsboro.

She was a homemaker. She enjoyed taking care of her granddaughter; reading; traveling; and coordinating Project Nino, a yearly Fresno Rotary pediatric medical mission to Mexico.

Survivors include her husband, David; sons, David Jr. of Fresno and Mark of San Lorenzo, Calif.; daughter, Jennifer of Fresno; sister, Marilyn Robertson and husband Robert; brother, Jim Unruh and wife Susie; mother, Mildred Unruh; daughter-in-law, Debra; and granddaughter, Allison.

Roland Juhnke

Roland Juhnke, 85, died Aug. 10, 2004, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center.

Born Feb. 19, 1919, in McPherson County, he was the third son of Wesley and Amelia (Graber) Juhnke.

He attended McPherson College, received a bachelor of science in education degree from Emporia State Teachers College in 1941, and a master's of education degree from the University of Colorado in 1946.

From 1946 until his retirement in 1981, he was superintendent of schools at Winona, principal at secondary schools in Inman and Partridge, and principal at Coronado and Arrowhead junior high schools in Kansas City.

On May 26, 1942, he married Marguerite Wall in Hillsboro. She died Oct. 1, 2001.

During World War II, he served with the 98th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force in Europe. From 1960-81, he was a Kansas City resident and was a member of the Welborn Community Church.

Since his retirement, he became a member of Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church and the Hillsboro Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife; brothers, Raymond Juhnke and Marvin Juhnke.

Survivors include his sons, Ralph Juhnke of Overland Park and Ron and his wife Margaret Juhnke of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters, Ethel Krehbiel of McPherson, Grace Hanson of McPherson, and Helen Fries of Minneapolis, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Aaron and Mark Juhnke.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Mennonite Church with Pastor Dave Plett officiating. Burial will precede the services and will be held at 10 a.m. at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

The family will receive guests from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at Hillsboro Memorial Chapel.

A memorial fund has been established with the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church building fund.

Leon Hajek

Leon Hajek, 79, died Aug. 7, 2004, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita.

Born Jan. 13, 1925, near Ramona in Marion County, he was the son of Raymond and Rosie (Vinduska) Hajek.

A retired farmer, he was a lifetime resident of the Tampa community and a member of St. John Nep. Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, Pilsen.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Hajek; and a sister, Pauline Hajek.

Survivors include two sisters, Loretta Blanchat of Wichita and Mildred Feik of Las Animas, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Nep. Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish, Pilsen, with Father Steve Gronert as celebrant. The rosary was recited preceding the Mass.

Burial was in Pilsen Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with Harry Hynes Hospice, Wichita.
