Downtown celebration is Sept. 4

The work is done and it's time to party.

The evening of Thursday, Sept. 4, features a full plate of activities set to celebrate the completion of Hillsboro's new downtown.

All summer long, construction crews have been busy resurfacing streets, installing new lights, getting rid of the unsightly wires, and putting in a four-way stop.

Thursday night will mark the end of the trials and tribulations.

And there will be plenty of activities for everyone.

"We want to keep people downtown for awhile," said Hillsboro Mayor Delores Dalke.

The fun starts at 7 p.m., when residents can chow down on hotdogs and soft drinks while checking out the 2004 vehicles on display downtown from area car dealers. The food is free, but donations will be accepted, Dalke said. All proceeds go toward buying a thermal imaging camera for city law enforcement agencies.

At 7:30 the Hillsboro Community Band will perform just west of Emprise Bank. Then a series of drawings will be held, awarding prizes donated by local businesses., with another musical performance to follow.

There will be no fireworks, Dalke said. The cost was too great for the Chamber of Commerce, and dry conditions made lighting fireworks hazardous, she said.
