Durham City Council ponders water tower testing

Contributing writer

Mayor Glennon Crowther informed the Durham City Council Sept. 3 that he had received a call about servicing the city water tower. He had given the phone number to Marvin Rediker, water supervisor. A firm in Iowa also had sent a card about tower servicing. Crowther asked council members whether they want to request bids before making a decision. After some discussion it was decided to return the card and ask for an inspection estimate.

Rediker reported that the galvanized pipe at the #2 well had become very corroded, so it had been replaced with plastic pipe at the time repairs were made. He said there had been no problems since the repairs were made. An average of 22,570 gallons per day for a total of 722,240 gallons of water were pumped in August. Pumps at the lift station ran 44 hours.

Verlin Sommerfeld reported that one delinquent customer had made a payment on his bill, but still owed a large amount. Another customer will have service discontinued unless the bill is paid, he said.

The mayor informed the council that he had talked to Fred David about wiring for the city's Christmas lights. The council asked for an estimate from David for the cost of the wiring.

Payment of $359.43 had been received from Zook Construction for the total amount billed to Sprint for the damages done while installing underground telephone lines.

Bills approved for payment all were routine.
