Economic council ponders county Web site
Visit the Web site www.marioncountyks.org, and you'll see a "Coming soon" sign.
But the Marion County Economic Development Council wants to change that. The group is in the process of developing a Web site promoting the county, which it discussed Wednesday at its monthly meeting.
Council members Gene Winkler and Rickey Roberts have been investigating the possible Web site, and Winkler has so far registered the domain name www.marioncounty ks.org.
The next step? Determine what content should be on the site and who should design it.
Attendees at the meeting discusses possible approaches, including simply linking site visitors to the individual city sites throughout the county.
But that's not a good idea, some said.
"We need to tell our story as a county," said Dennis Nichols, city administrator for Marion.
Other members suggested that the council contact Ricky Burcky, a Florence resident who's designed the site www.florenceweb.net. The site also provides information for other Marion County towns, and he's maintained this site, free of charge, for some time, council members said.
Roberts said that he would contact Burcky and see if he'd be interested in designing the county's Web site for pay.
In other council business:
— Members agreed that the Labor Day fireworks display should be put into motion as soon as possible. Labor day this year is Sept. 2.
"It's getting late," Nichols said.
The next step for the council is to print the posters advertising the fireworks, which are shot off at the Marion County Lake. Baker Brothers printing in Hillsboro has handled the job in the past.
Carol Wiebe, of the Hillsboro Development Commission, agreed to look into the matter of re-printing last year's posters, with a change in the date.
— Susan Cooper, economic development director for Marion, said that one more person is needed for the board overseeing the county's new micro-loan program. The board needs one more representative from the Tampa area.
