The Hillsboro High School boys' track team dominated the competition at the regional track meet held last Friday at Marion. The team nearly doubled the second place team's score, scoring 108 points.

With 16 schools competing at regionals, Cheney placed second with 59 points followed by Southeast of Saline with 53 rounding out the top three team scores.

"Without question this is a very talented group of young men, but they truly have the desire to excel in the sport of track and field and have fun while doing it," coach Dennis Boldt said.

Hillsboro qualified nine boys for and two girls state competition. Those finishing in the top four of each event advance to state competition held on May 30 and 31 at Cessna Stadium on the Wichita State University campus in Wichita.

In the field events, the boys' team claimed first and second place finishes in the long jump with Alan Yoder and Caleb Marsh, respectively. In pole vault the team placed one, two, and five, sending Marsh and Daniel Yoder to state. In triple jump, with two and four finishes, Derek Mayfield and Sammy Espada will represent Hillsboro at the state meet.

"Never before have we had so many multiple qualifiers in our events, particularly field events," Boldt said.

Highlights of the day, according to Boldt, was the performance of Aaron and Daniel Yoder in the 800 meter run. Aaron and Daniel finished one and three, with times of 1:58.70 and 1:59.00, respectively. Both of the Yoders broke the two minute barrier and the current school record held by Garrett Call at state two years ago.

The Hillsboro boys continued to dominate on the track, tying a school record in the 4x100 meter relay team of Alan Yoder, Tyler Peachey, Brodie Unrau, and Marsh. Their time was 44.10. Kyle Jilka will be the alternate.

"These boys ran the school's fastest time and finished third," Boldt said. "I'd say there were some pretty good athletes at our regional."

The Hillsboro girls did not fair as well as the boys at regional, only two qualified to go on to state.

"The competition was extreme in the girls' division as it was in the boys," Boldt said.

The girls' team scored 21 points and placed twelfth. Conway Springs took first, Wichita Independent second, and Minneapolis third.

In the field events, Charity Davis qualified for state in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 7.25 inches.

Alisa Jost and Davis were the only Lady Trojans to advance to the state meet.

"Charity had her best jump of the year, and her best time in the 100 (12.90), Boldt said. "It is the right time to peak and this is what enabled her to qualify in the 100 and return in the long jump."

"Alisa also ran her best time (1:2.50) of the season placing fourth."

According to Boldt, the girls' 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams "ran great times, the best of the season in fact, but did not qualify for state."

Acknowledging his seniors and juniors, Elise Matz, Jessica Boese, Andrea King, Cheryl Prieb, and Mindy Munguya.

Boldt said, "I know they are disappointed, and they will look at the results in other regionals and see that slower times qualified, but they should be proud of their efforts."

Those qualifying for the state will compete Friday in the preliminaries and field event finals. The state finals will be Saturday. The meet will begin for 1A, 2A, and 3A at 8:30 a.m. on both days.
