Elsie Mae Chance
Elsie Mae Chance, 90, of Hillsboro died May 9, 2002, at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.
Born May 22, 1903 in Carlton, she was the daughter of William H. and Ida Bell (Kean) Medley.
At the age of 15, she was converted and baptized at the First Baptist Church in Carlton.
After graduating from high school and Emporia State Teachers College, she taught school for several years. Later, she moved to Wichita and worked as a bookkeeper at Spines Department Store.
She moved to Tampa and worked at Tampa State Bank. She also lived with her parents to help take care of her mother.
On April 25, 1946, in Salina, she married Fred Chance. They lived in Carlton where he farmed. The couple moved to a farm near Tampa, and attended the Evangelical Church. When that church closed, they transferred their membership to the First Baptist Church in Durham. They retired in 1965 and moved to Hillsboro.
She was active in the women's missionary society and helped in many areas of the church.
She later worked as a bookkeeper at the cooperative in Durham and did income tax returns from her home. Her husband died in 1988.
She later moved to Parkside Apartments and then to Parkside Homes.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include her sisters, Margie Hegge of Wichita, and Irene Novak of Hillsboro.
Services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church in Durham with Pastor Milton Zeeb officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Cemetery in Salina.
Memorials have been established with Parkside Homes and the First Baptist Church in Durham.
