Elsie Winkley

Elsie M. Winkley, 90, died May 31, 2004, at Marion Manor.

Born Aug. 18, 1913, near Marion, she was the daughter of George and Emma Hett.

On Aug. 17, 1933, she married Irvin Williams. He died in 1964.

She devoted her life to raising her family and helping others. She also enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Peabody until transferring to Aulne United Methodist Church in 1957.

She was a member of United Methodist Women, the extension homemakers' unit, and enjoyed being part of the "Singing Grannies." For many years she was a volunteer at Prairie View.

On Oct. 12, 1968, she married Charles Winkley. He died in 1998.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Sue Williams and Dean and Wanda Williams, all of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Dwight Fruechting of Salina and Jeanette and John Clark of Louisburg; stepchildren, Marvin Winkley of Kansas City and Sandra and Arlin Meats of Auburn; a brother-in-law, Allen "Pete" Propp; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday morning at Aulne United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Moore officiating.

Jim Hett was vocalist and Anita Brookens was organist.

Casket bearers were Doug Williams, Jeff Williams, Dave Weeks, Jeff Weeks, Monty Frazier, and Arlin Meats.

Honorary casket bearers were Gary Williams, Bruce Williams, Linda Holub, Jim Williams, Neil Williams, Kay Stika, Denise Sandifar, Susan Panter, Debbie Boring, Pam Weeks, and Vicki Matacchiera.

Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with the church.
