Fair time again
By the time this issue hits many of our readers' hands, half of the county fair will be over.
That includes the women's ranch rodeo, the parade, the cloggers, and the children's pedal pull.
But there's still plenty left — the final night of the rodeo, the ag seminar, the demolition derby.
All of which may be commonplace to you.
I, however, have not had the pleasure of attending one of those loud, joyous events referred to as the "demo derby."
This reporter's experience with county fairs ends at the Salina Bicentennial Center parking lot, where all the carnival rides sat. That's where I rode in the "giant spinning teddy bear ride" with my best friend, even though we were both in our early twenties.
This year's different. This year, I'm going to get a taste of it all.
I will go to the rodeo, even though I'm a city girl who can't tell barley from soybeans. I'll take in the demo derby — nay, even wish that I was a driver. (Those who've ridden with me before know I'm qualified.)
You should too. Even if you've been to the fair a thousand times before and have seen it all, go again.
Absorb the atmosphere that is pure Kansas: the late-summer county fair.
