Hillsboro residents longing for a good bear claw, long john, or plain glazed donut won't have to drool much longer.
Daylight Donuts is back in business.
The donut store located at 111 West Grand, across the street from Dale's Supermarket, has been purchased by Kerry and Kathleen Magathlan. The couple and their five children live approximately two miles south of Hillsboro.
Ever since former owner Dan Janzen sold the business this spring, the Magathlans had considered buying the Daylight Donuts franchise.
"We joked about it," Kathleen said.
But it wasn't until July that the family seriously considered the purchase. The real estate deal closed on Aug. 2.
Since then, the Magathlans have kept busy updating the store, giving the paneled walls a fresh coat of primer and paint while landlord Paul Epp does construction work on the front door.
Kerry, who works for Boeing in Wichita, has taken some extra vacation days during the process.
So far the Magathlans have learned the basics of making donuts from former owner Janzen. On Tuesday, Aug. 20, a representative from the Daylight Donuts company is coming to Hillsboro to give them thorough training.
The store should open the next week, they said.
"There won't be too many changes at first," Kerry said.
For the first week of business, Daylight Donuts will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 11 a.m. After that first week, regular hours will be Thursday through Saturday 5 to 11 a.m. and Sundays 5 to 9 a.m.
Kerry hopes that local churches will order donuts to serve before or after their Sunday morning services. It would be best if churches would place those orders by Saturday night, he said.
Some day, the donut shop may stay open for lunches or in the evening for college students — but that's still in the future, they said.
The Magathlans see their new business as a way to get to know the Hillsboro community better. When you commute two hours each day to work in Wichita, that's kind of tough, Kathleen said.
"It'd be nice to be part of the community," Kerry said.
The family also plans, eventually, to bring their five children in to help out. The children range in ages from 2 to 11, and the Magathlans run a home school for them.
Helping out at the donut shop would be a good way to teach them basic business skills, Kathleen said.
