Family fun on tap for holiday weekend
Hillsboro will be a flurry of activity beginning tomorrow during Hillsboro's 120th Birthday and Family Folk Festival/All-School Reunion.
With the purchase of a $5 button, participants can enjoy a weekend of fun and interesting activities.
At 7 p.m. Friday, Ottaway Amusements will provide a carnival on the west side of the Marion County Fairgrounds. The carnival will be available during the day and evening on Saturday, and Sunday evening. Tickets are necessary for carnival activities.
At 9:04 p.m., a street dance featuring W.C. Edgar and Band will be held downtown at the intersection of Grand and Main streets. In case of inclement weather, the dance will be held at the former AMPI building.
Saturday will be a day packed with various participant and spectator activities.
Beginning at 7 a.m., a fly-in is scheduled at Alfred Schroeder Field at Hillsboro Airport.
At 8:04 a.m., a three-person, 18-hole scramble golf tournament will commence at Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course.
Numerous activities and events will begin at 9:04 a.m.. The Route 56 Classic Cruisers Car Club again will sponsor a classic car show until 3 p.m. at Memorial Park Circle.
Also beginning at 9:04 a.m. are activities at Mennonite Settlement Museum Complex at Ash and D streets.
Activities include Low German stories, children's activities, blacksmith demonstrations, horse-drawn wagon and carriage, corn-shelling demonstration, butter churning, and rope making.
On the fairgrounds, a quilt show, antique tractor display, food vendors, McPherson Train Club display, and memorabilia will be available.
A 5k fun run will begin at 9:45 a.m. from Hillsboro Municipal Swimming Pool. The run and one-mile walk/jog for youth will end at the pool. Entrants need to register prior to the race.
At 10:34 a.m., the city's 120th Celebration Parade will begin on Main Street. Floats, antique cars, and class reunions are anticipated to participate.
Music from Snigglefritz will be provided at the pavilion at noon, 1, and 2 p.m.
Skydivers from Kansas State University Parachute Club will present a show beginning at 1 p.m.
The Ken Stout Air Shows will perform three acts at 1:30, 2:50, and 3:40 p.m.
Oklahoma Barnstormers Remote Control Air Show will be at 1:50 and 3:10 p.m.
By 4 p.m., airspace at the airport will be open.
The All-School Reunion will begin with a banquet at 6:34 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro High School gymnasium.
Fireworks will mark the end of the fun-filled day at 9:34 p.m. at the Sports Complex. In case of inclement weather, the fireworks display will be held at 9:34 p.m. Sunday evening.
Sunday's activities will begin at 4:04 p.m. with the Mennonite Men's Chorus at Tabor College Gym.
A demolition derby will begin at 6:04 p.m. at the fairgrounds arena. Admission to the derby is $8.
The final event for the weekend will be a 10 a.m. Memorial Day program at Memorial Park Circle. The program, presented by Hillsboro American Legion, will honor area World War II veterans.
