Famous people come to life at elementary

Helen Keller, George Washington, Jackie Robinson, and Rosa Parks made an appearance at Goessel Elementary School on Friday. So did Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Louis Braille.

No, it wasn't part of some time-travel experiment — it was "Famous People Day," put on by Dale Wiens' third-grade class.

Each student either chose or was assigned a famous person from the past. They then researched his or her life, using the Internet and library as resources.

To demonstrate what they learned, the students wrote a life summary, timeline of important events, and an acrostic poem, Wiens said. They put their creativity to use by making posters, dioramas, and coming up with costumes to wear to portray the person.

On presentation day, each student wore the costumes and answered questions from the first-person perspective — just as though they were the person.

Although the students worked on their projects for about three hours a day, students received lots of after-school support from helpful family members, Wiens said.s
