Farmers market supports local produce
To encourage people to purchase locally grown or produced products, Hillsboro promotions committee is holding a farmer's market three times this summer.
The market hopes to include baked goods, produce, crafts, jellies, fruit, flowers, "anything hand or home made is welcome, you name it," said chamber of commerce director, Megan Kilgore.
The market will be from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, July 17, and Aug. 7 in the parking lot south of the Emprise ATM on D Street.
The first of the markets will take place on the weekend that Hillsboro hosts MAYB tournaments, and Kilgore hopes for a lot of participation in the farmer's market.
This year's farmer's market is a trial to gauge community response. If interest is high, Kilgore says the market may be expanded in the future.
"We just want people to start thinking about buying fresh produce locally," said Kilgore. She also thought it might be a good way for some groups to raise funds.
