Feedlot expansion discussed by city council

Peabody city councilman Tim Peterson and city administrator Jeff Benbrook were appointed Monday as city representatives at a county commission meeting Tuesday in Marion.

County Commissioner Randy Dallke urged council members to have a presence at the meeting for the purpose of discussing feedlot expansion.

Subsequent council discussion on the proposed expansion of Clarence Busentiz's feedlot two miles southwest of Peabody led the mayor and council members to come out against the plan based on the information available.

Benbrook and Peterson will present county commissioners with the city's concerns about the health of its citizens, pollution, air and water quality, and negative economic impact.

In other business, the council:

— reviewed nuisance properties.

— was introduced to new full-time police officer Travis Wilson.

— approved a resolution to declare an inoperable vehicle at 712 Poplar Street a nuisance.

— approved the use of city park April 22 by Kansas Draft Horse and Mule Association. Benbrook will send a copy of city ordinances so the group knows the regulations. A $200 refundable bond will be required as well.

— heard the city will begin initial planning Thursday for emergency preparedness for the sewer plant as mandated by Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

— accepted an offer by Dennis Pickens for the property at 607 Locust Street. Payment terms have not yet been resolved.

— opened a bid from Flaming Metal Products for a new city shop at Ninth and Olive streets. No action was taken pending an internal review of city funds and financing options.

— went into a 10-minute executive session with Curtis Gray. No action was taken on return to open session.
