FFA competes in career development event
Goessel High School FFA competed Feb. 16 at Marion in the Dairy Foods Career Development Event. Five GHS students placed in the top 10, and students won the A-team and B-team events and placed third in the freshmen divisions of the South Central District event.
Members of the first place A-team included Justin Fensky, third high individual; Alex Drake, fifth; Bubba Holder, 10th; and Jake Meeks.
Members of the first place B-team included Chad Schrag, second; Brandan Harvey, Janae Foudray, and Daniel Thompson.
Placing first in the freshmen division and second in the overall contest, Robin Wilcox, Jake Liles, Morgan Foundray, and Bryce Reed combined for a third place finish.
According to sophomore Holder, he competed in the CDE because "it was easy and fun."
Schrag, junior and second high individual in the event, stated the hardest area of the competition was the milk off-flavor identification.
"I have done it the last two years and it is fun and exciting," said junior Justin Fensky.
Students were required to demonstrate their knowledge of the dairy foods industry by identifying cheeses, identifying and scoring off-flavors of milk, performing and scoring a California mastitis test, solving net cow income and pricing problems, evaluating milking units, identifying real and artificial dairy products, and taking written tests of general production and marketing information.
