Flood plain status changes for county

David Brazil, county planning director, transfer station manager, and environmental health officer, reported Monday to Marion County Commission that county residents now may receive more coverage for flood insurance.

Brazil received a letter from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) that determined Marion County had returned to the regular phase of the National Flood Insurance Program effective March 1.

Previously the county's flood plain status was classified as an "emergency" phase and limited residents to receive no more than $35,000 in residential insurance coverage. Residents now may receive up to $250,000 in residential insurance coverage.

Business insurance coverage also will be changed.

Flood insurance rate maps will remain the same.

In other business:

— Personnel policies for transfer station employees were approved.

Brazil said he will make necessary changes when the county clerk updates payroll software.

— Brazil asked the commission to consider for discussion and decision at a later meeting the possibility of reconditioning a walking trash trailer instead of purchasing a new trailer.

A new trailer was purchased last year. Funds were budgeted in 2005 to purchase a second new trailer but Brazil asked the commission to consider funds be used to recondition the used trailer and use remaining funds for an outside fence.

Brazil said the transportation of white goods (refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers) caused the most damage to the walking trailers. He suggested the new walking trailer be used for transporting refuse and the older trailer be used for transporting white goods.

Commissioner Randy Dallke asked if another type of trailer other than a walking trailer could be used for the disposal of white goods. Brazil said the walking trailer was used because the moving trailer floor does not require the truck driver to manually remove items from the bed.

Dallke asked if a dump truck could be used instead of a walking trailer and if there would be a considerable price difference. Brazil will check prices and options.
