Florence City Council considers Sunday beer sales

Florence City Council members addressed Monday night the issue of cereal malt beverage sales by local businesses on Sundays. Such decisions lie with individual communities since the legislature altered state liquor laws in 2005.

Council members reviewed ordinances from several cities and information from Kansas League of Municipalities.

After discussion they agreed to have city clerk Darla Gore send the sample ordinances to the city attorney for review and recommendation.

City appointments were made as follows: city attorney, Marilyn Wilder; municipal judge, Bryson Mills; ambulance crew chief, Judy Creamer; fire chief, Tim Parmley; city superintendent, Jeff Wagner; city treasurer, Mary Jane Grimmett; city clerk and court clerk, Darla Gore; acting police chief, Erik King; standards board members, Sue Klassen, Bryan Harper, Dan Ludwig, Randy Mills, and Ed Robinson; standards board secretary, Darla Gore.

John Lehman was appointed to the housing authority to replace Larry Blosser.

Council also heard of a successful Spring Fling promotion held during the past weekend. Chairman Trayce Warner reported the Labor Day Celebration fund-raiser brought in nearly $6,000.

In other business, the council:

— approved a $50 donation to Marion County National Child Safety program.

— heard that Atmos Energy employees will be in Florence examining the gas system for leaks and making repairs as necessary. The process is expected to last until the end of the year.

— refused a request from city employee Mark Bishop to be paid for both time and mileage while attending a wastewater workshop in Topeka. Council approved the payment of mileage only.

— scheduled a work meeting at 6 p.m. Monday to review trash billing procedures. Additional business will be a presentation by city superintendent Jeff Wagner for the purchase of a new mower. The council will decide whether or not to make the purchase.

— heard that due to health problems the members of Oil Valley Mowing will not be able to mow at the cemetery this year as agreed. Council instructed Gore to run an ad for the position.

— approved a request to use city picnic tables and the ball field and concession stand June 4 for Tour de Florence.

— heard the county burn ban had been lifted.

— approved a request by acting police chief Erik King to send Debbie Stone, the department's new officer to a drug and narcotics class May 17 and 18 in Topeka.

— agreed to coordinate concrete work on both the new gazebo at Hillcrest Cemetery and the apron to the drinking fountain at the ball field. The projects will be completed in the next week or so.

— heard from Harvey Wells the city trash truck has left large ruts in an alley between 10th and 11th streets. Wells asked council to either rock the alley or deny the trash truck access to it. After discussion council refused the request.
