For What It's Worth: 'Angels' appreciated

Our first real ice and snow fall was a long time coming, but how beautiful and welcome . . . and treacherous! As I turned off Ash Street one evening to come to Parkside, I found out a bit about the latter.

I was stuck and unable to move with the rear end of my car still sticking out on Ash. Luckily, a car came from the south that wanted to turn into Parkside also, but I was blocking the entry. So some young men came to the rescue, and along with occupants of another car that stopped to help, I made it home safely. My sincere thanks to those "angels!"

The Olympics are on, and I find it hard to unglue my eyes from television. What dedication, hard work and stamina those terrific athletes exhibit.

The ice skating is a favorite — has been since the first movie I saw featuring Olympian Sonja Heine of Norway. She won the gold in 1928, 1932, and 1936. And she was also a fine little actress.

My only try at ice skating was a fiasco. It was on the Smoky Hill River in a pair of borrowed ice skates. With weak ankles, I couldn't even stand up without two people holding on to me. It's funny now, but embarrassing then.

Which serves to remind me of a number of talents I admire for which I have no aptitude. Wonderful is the fact they're there to enjoy as an audience.

I'm pretty comfortable in my life as a "senior citizen," "little old lady," "golden girl," or whatever other title fits. Some friends from college days call these their "tween years" — too old to be young and too young to be old.

Recently, I took on an added bit of responsibility when in a weak moment I agreed to be class agent for my graduating group at Bethany College — the class of 1937! My premier task is to write a letter twice a year that the college then sends out to my fellow alumni. Come May 24-25 and reunion time, it will be interesting to see how many appear for the 65th anniversary.

Five alumni responded to my first letter. We're all in our middle to upper eighties, but their outlooks seemed rather upbeat and I found that remarkable.

I doubt I'll have the job long enough to qualify for a pension. Of course, no stipend was offered which is OK, then I don't have to apologize for "giving notice."

Plans are to fly southeast later this week and visit family in Georgia and Florida. I hope the new tightened airport security won't be too tough. I also hope the wheelchair will be there to whiz me through to my waiting daughter and son-in-law.
