For What It's Worth: Memorable Memories

Comfort-wise, the 60, 70 and even 80 degree weather can hang around for the remainder of June. However, I have a feeling that our farmers are ready for more sunshine, breeze, and warmth to hasten the ripening wheat toward harvest time.

Our Methodist folks were getting their pictures taken last weekend for inclusion in a new church directory soon to be published. When I went for mine, I had one of those "it's a small world" events take place.

The young man showing me my results asked if I was a Hillsboro native, by way of conversation. I answered "almost," since next year will mark my 50th year as a resident.

He pursued the conversation with "Where are you from?"

I replied with my stock answer to that query: "I was born in California and reared in Texas and New Mexico until I married a Kansas native and made this Sunflower State my home."

He then asked where in New Mexico I lived, and when I said Clovis, we were both shocked and surprised to find that we were graduates of Clovis High school — generations apart, of course! I graduated in 1933 and he in 1950. He added that his parents still live there. Small world indeed!

Over the Memorial weekend, I tucked another two high school reunions under my belt. They took place at Sedgwick, where I taught vocal music a bunch of years ago. The class of 1941 was celebrating its 62nd anniversary and the class of 1943 its 60th. Both events were really enjoyable, and the years had touched the students lightly. Making the event even more pleasurable was that I was able to stay the two days with another faculty member of that time — home economics teacher Dolores Challendar, who continues to live on her farm home north of Sedgwick. We had a great time reminiscing and visiting with former students and each other.

Memorial weekend also brought a welcome visit with son Skip and wife Lois from Pratt. We made our annual trek to Marquette for the special service at the cemetery where Bud's parents, grandparents, and three sisters are buried along with other family and Bud's memorial stone.

With Sharon Boese's help, I now have a bit of flower color on my small patio and a single tomato plant that I am counting on for some red, ripe tomatoes some time this summer.

Father's Day is observed this weekend and as sometimes happens, it will also mark my late husband's birthday.

Father's Day brings back a host of ever-so-rich memories. I was so blessed with my own father and also with a wonderful father-in-law. Then there was Bud who filled the bill so well as father of our children . . . generous always with his love and caring.
