Fred Moffitt

Fred Moffitt, 96, of McPherson, died Dec. 18, 2006.

Born May 27, 1910, at Ledford, Ill., he was the son of John and Elizabeth (Lawrence) Moffitt.

He graduated from Tampa High School, Tampa.

On Oct. 15, 1934, he married Evelyn Belton. She died in 1985.

He married Ruby Yauk on May 30, 1988, at Durham. She died in 2003.

He was employed as postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1972. He then served as Tampa city clerk for 15 years, retiring in 1987.

In 2001, he moved to McPherson.

He was a former member of the Tampa Lions Club and charter member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Tampa. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Moffitt; grandson, James Zimmerman; sisters, Pauline Taylor and Mary Bowman; and brothers, William, Irvin, and Claude Moffitt.

Survivors include two daughters, JoAnn Zimmerman of Virginia Beach, Va., and Loretta Brown of Lilburn, Ga.; two sons, Pat Moffitt of St. Louis, Mo., and Mark Moffitt of McPherson; sister, Julia Strickland of Fairfield, Ohio; brother, Edward Moffitt of Hammond, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The rosary will be recited at 7:15 p.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrate at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father David Lies and the Rev. John Black officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cemetery, Tampa.

Memorial funds have been established with St. Joseph Catholic Church or Countryside Covenant Church, both of McPherson.
