Goessel High School golf team had high hopes May 21 going into the 1A state golf tournament at the familiar course in Hesston.

Several teams from the area spent time practicing at Hesston during the last week. Last year's state champion team repeated in 2007.

Quivera Heights, Pretty Prairie, and Olpe all ended with the same score after their top four scores were totaled. The ties were then broken with the score of the fifth-place finishers on each team.

Each of the top teams scored 346 and Goessel came in at 364. The winning individual score was 78.

Goessel senior Zach Frey ended the day with a 10th-place medal, shooting 84. Frey has consistently led the 2007 Bluebird team this season.

Nathan Ensz dropped in an 89, and freshman Tyler Schmidt came in with 92. Derek Brown shot 99 and Alex Drake and Cameron Voth both came in at an even 100. Seniors Frey and Drake ended their high school careers at the tournament.
