Garden honors Tabor's past
Tabor's Homecoming celebration this year will include the dedication ceremony of the Dr. Henry W. Lohrenz Memorial Garden. The ceremony will take place at 11:45 a.m. Saturday in front of the Lohrenz Building on the Tabor College campus.
The garden was built in honor of Lohrenz, a founder and first president of Tabor College, and features plaques honoring Lohrenz and his daughter Mariana Lohrenz Remple. A sculpture of Lohrenz with the quote "And what can we do for our young people" was designed and created by artist Lucy Jean Remple McAllister, Lohrenz's granddaughter.
"It's beautiful and I think it's a wonderful enhancement to our campus and to the Lohrenz Building as well," said Peggy Goertzen, director of the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies and organizer of the dedication.
The dedication ceremony is a special addition to homecoming festivities this year, according to Steve Berg, Tabor College director of alumni. The ceremony will include music and speeches from family members and dignitaries.
"It's a fine tribute to a man who was instrumental in our college," said Goertzen, "and we hope a lot of people on campus will come out and celebrate with us."
