Gazebo will be added to Florence cemetery

Florence City Council Monday night approved the purchase of a gazebo for Hillcrest Cemetery.

Linda Britton has been working on a project to record and map the graves at Hillcrest. Britton requested permission to purchase the gazebo and incorporate it into the project.

The gazebo will be octagonal and the names of those buried at Hillcrest will be listed alphabetically on the inside walls of the structure. Britton plans a separate listing of veterans and Florence police officers who have died in the line of duty.

Council members approved a $6,100 expenditure which also covers delivery and installation.

Mayor and council also heard that state forestry personnel will be in Florence Saturday to plant trees at the city tree farm.

Two thousand trees are scheduled to be planted that day. State foresters also will host a picnic lunch for volunteers who help with the planting. They will bring picnic tables as well as food.

In case of inclement weather or if the ground still is muddy, the planting will take place April 1.
