Generosity yields economic benefits

It seemed very familiar and comforting, somehow, to see basketball being played in Hillsboro's gyms again.

This past weekend, hundreds of hoop players descended upon Hillsboro from all over the country for the MAYB tournament. The players were everywhere, filling Hillsboro High and Tabor courts.

And if you think that the Robert C. Brown gymnasium can get warm during the winter, just wait until you step inside when it's nearly 90 degrees outside.

But this weekend didn't just bring a bevy of basketballers — it also brought an economic boost to Hillsboro.

Motels were full. Restaurants were hopping. Gas stations were busy.

Where there are visitors, there is commerce.

Hillsboro has some very good sports facilities for a town of its size. And as long as it continues to "share the wealth" — rent out its gyms and courts to those who need them — the town's generosity will be rewarded.

Not just with the warm fuzzies that come with helping out an organization in need, but real economic gain.
