"This was not what I expected," Coach Justin Coup said after Goessel High School's 52-6 football victory against Little River. "They had some key players injured that could not play tonight and that definitely was a factor in this game."
Still, it was the Bluebirds night as they took the opening kick-off near mid-field and didn't take long to score.
Travis Fensky sprinted around the left end and went 43 yards for the Bluebird first score only 19 seconds into the game.
Little River was unable to convert on fourth down on its first possession, and the Bluebirds began to march on their second possession.
Kendall Voth settled under a 36-yard pass from Austin Unruh for another score and also caught a pass for the extra points, giving the Bluebirds a 14-0 lead.
Goessel was advancing again just before the quarter ended as Austin Unruh faked a hand off and sprinted 11 yards up field for another score.
Unruh followed his blockers for the extra points and the Bluebirds led 22-0.
After another Little River punt, Fensky went to his left again. Staying on his feet after being hit by several Redskins, Fensky outran the defenders for a mystifying 37-yard run.
Fensky caught an Unruh pass for the extra points giving the Bluebirds a 30-0 lead.
The Bluebird defensive line got into the Redskin backfield more than once to throw Little River for losses. With one minute, 26 seconds left to play in the half, Little River was forced to punt.
Goessel's no-huddle offense churned up yardage, and with nine seconds to play, Kendall Voth grabbed a 15-yard pass from Unruh for another Bluebird score.
Unruh ran in the extra points giving the Bluebirds a surprising 38-0 halftime lead.
Little River was able to get down the field and score on their first possession of the second half. However, the Bluebird passing game continued to be successful and Voth hauled in another pass getting the ball to the eight-yard line.
Senior Dustin Peterson carried on the next two plays and scored untouched with 3:03 left in the third period.
On Little River's next possession, Nathan Walker forced the Redskin quarterback to throw the ball toward the middle of the field where Weston Hiebert intercepted the pass and followed a blocker 17 yards into the end zone.
The eight-man mercy rule came into play with a score of 52-6.
Kurtis Duerksen, Grady Stultz, and Walker contained the running game of the Redskins and the Goessel defensive backfield did a stellar job again for the evening.
"Our defense has been very consistent," Coach Coup said.
The Bluebirds have a non-district game Friday with Wichita Sunrise Christian before continuing District 5 play Oct. 19 at Claflin.
