Goessel High School boys' basketball team won all three of its games this past week.

Several steals and lay-ups allowed the Bluebird boys to erase an early game deficit Thursday against Flint Hills.

Back-to-back three-pointers in the first quarter by Kendall Voth and Kurtis Duerksen gave the Bluebirds a 12-7 lead midway through the first quarter.

However, the Mustangs tied the game at 16 with two mintues, 34 seconds left in the half.

It was aggressive defense and a balanced offensive attack from the Bluebirds that allowed Goessel to take a 35-25 lead at the end of the third period.

Twice Goessel led by 12 points in the fourth quarter, but Flint Hills scratched their way back within two possessions, 44-38, to keep the Goessel crowd on edge.

Making good on four of six free throws at the end of the game sealed the victory for the Bluebirds in this non-league contest.

Austin Unruh led the team in scoring with 13 points, Duerksen came in with eight points (three steals), Craig Banman scored seven (five assists), Weston Hiebert seven, Cameron Voth, Travis Fensky, and Kendall Voth three, Seth Ott two, and Nathan Ensz two to go along with 11 rebounds.

Goessel 47, Remington 33

The Bluebirds scored 17 points in the first quarter Friday and maintained their lead throughout the rest of the game, defeating Remington by a final score of 47-33.

The scores at the quarter breaks saw Goessel in the lead 17-10, 27-20, 35-26, and a final of 47-33.

The Broncos cut a Goessel nine-point lead down to three midway through the second quarter.

After Goessel grabbed a 10-point lead in the third quarter the Bluebirds were able to keep the game out of reach for the Broncos.

Goessel's balanced scoring more than offset the performance of two Bronco players who scored in double figures.

Ensz knocked in 11 points, Unruh nine, Banman and Duerksen each had seven, Kendall Voth hit six, Hiebert four, and Ott three.

Goessel 45, Moundridge 35

Because of the snow and bad weather Feb. 5 the Bluebirds played their third game in three days Saturday against Moundridge.

The two teams had similar records and the lead changed hands five times in the first half.

Goessel jumped out to an 11-6 lead but Brian Begnoche scored all of Moundridge's 11 points in the second quarter and got the Wildcats back into the lead.

Goessel responded in the final three minutes of the second quarter with Banman, Kendall Voth and Fensky three-pointers surrounding a Seth Ott jumper.

Goessel led at the half 22-17.

A low-scoring third quarter found the Bluebirds ahead 28-22.

Although Moundridge scored first in the fourth period, Goessel went on a 9-2 run and the lead would be too large for the Wildcats to conquer.

Unruh led the Bluebird scoring with 13 points, Banman knocked in 12, Ensz six, Ott five, Kendall Voth and Fensky three, Hiebert two, and Duerksen one.

The Goessel boys now sport a 5-4 league record and 12-6 overall record.

Goessel will finish the regular season with games against Ell Saline and Canton-Galva, both at home.

Goessel also will host the 1A regional tournament next week with the seedings to follow Tuesday's game with Ell Saline.
