In the first round of the Canton-Galva Tournament on Monday, Goessel beat 4A Douglass by a score of 55-49.

In almost an exact repeat of Friday's game, the Bluebirds jumped out to a 36-23 lead with six minutes to play in the third quarter.

Then the Bluebirds went cold, and the Bulldogs made a run for the lead.

Douglass got as close as 49-47 with 2:32 to play in the game, before the Bluebirds could fly out of danger.

Six of eight free throw shooting proved to be good enough as Goessel advanced to play Belle Plaine tonight.

Goessel shot 22 percent from the three-point circle but hit 59 percent from two-point range.

Leading scorers for Goessel were Jeremy Voth with 20 points and 15 rebounds followed by Jesse Goertzen with 16. Other scorers were Kent Peters with nine points, five assists and four steals; Aaron Stehman with five points; Josh Schmidt and Clinton Plenert with two each; and Ben Schmidt with one.

On Friday Goessel defeated Trinity 53-46 in a Heart of America League game.

The large homecoming crowd saw the Bluebirds take a commanding lead at the end of the third quarter 35-24. Goessel built that lead to 15 points, only to see Trinity come storming back in the fourth quarter.

The Celtics outscored the Bluebirds 15-4 to get the score as close as 46-42. Goessel clung on to the lead scoring five of six free throws to finish with an eight-point lead.

Goessel shot 22 percent from the three-point arch and 69 percent from the free throw line, picking up an important mid-season victory.

Scoring for the team were Voth with 15, Goertzen with 11, Stehman with nine points, five assists and five steals, Peters and Plenert with eight each, and Schmidt with two.

The team record is now 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the league.
