Goessel played Argonia Friday even in eight-man football for two and a half quarters, but the visiting team scored three touchdowns in a row before the Bluebird squad could score again. This was the first loss of the season for the Bluebird football team and it was the home opener.

Argonia took advantage of a Bluebird fumble in the first quarter and marched 60 yards for the first score of the game, but missed on the extra point.

Jordan Voth recovered a Raiders' fumble on Goessel's 35-yard line. Several plays later Garrett Hiebert took the ball over the goal line on a one-yard plunge. The Bluebird extra-point kick was blocked and the score remained tied 6-6.

Argonia scored on a 28-yard run with seven minutes to play before half and did convert the extra points leaving the score 14-6.

Goessel played fairly good defense and Argonia kept hurting themselves with penalties late in the half (total of 104 yards for the game), but the Bluebirds were not able to tie the game before the half-time buzzer.

With 40 seconds gone in the third quarter, Justin Fensky struggled to stay on his feet and sprinted 48 yards for a touchdown.

Goessel snapped the ball for a fake kick, and Garrett Hiebert tossed the ball to a wide-open Ryan Janzen to tie the score 14-14.

Jake Unruh made a good stop on the Argonia kick-off return and the momentum seemed to have swung to the Bluebird's side.

However, a 50-yard dash by Argonia's running back quickly silenced the Bluebird's enthusiasm as Raiders again took the lead 20-14.

Both defenses caused the other teams to punt, and Chad Schrag brought the Bluebirds to the 18-yard line with a nifty return. Fensky was again able to take the pigskin across the goal line with 5:50 to play in the third quarter.

Goessel fumbled the snap on the extra point attempt and left the score was tied at 20-20.

At this point in the third quarter, Argonia seemed to take control of the game. With 2:02 in the third, the Wildcats scored on a six-yard run.

Two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter they scored on a 58-yard pass play. After another Bluebird fumble, Argonia scored again, giving them a 42-20 lead.

Fensky broke loose one more time with 33 seconds to play for Goessel's last points and the final score showed a loss for Goessel 42-28.

Alex Drake was helped off the field in the fourth quarter with an injury.

Goessel will play at home against Centre on Friday.
