The Goessel High School golf team, a mixture of seniors and sophomores, secured championship medals this past week at the Heart of America League tournament.
Seven of 12 league schools participated in the meet, and Goessel finished 14 strokes ahead of Peabody-Burns, and 38 strokes ahead of Sedgwick.
Coach Greg Bontrager was beaming.
"Four of my golfers were in the top-10 medals, and winning first place as a team was great," he said.
Sophomore Tyler Schmidt and senior Nathan Ensz both shot an 82, and took the second and third place individual medals.
Senior Cameron Voth knocked down a score of 84, claiming fifth place, and sophomore Hayden Goerzen finished in eighth place, one stroke behind with an 85.
Seniors Jake Schrag and Derek Brown finished 13th and 14th with scores of 91 and 92 respectively.
Goessel was at the regional meet Monday at the Kinsley Country Club for the 1A Golf Tournament.
The top three teams advance to the state tournament Monday at Dodge City Country Club.
Bontrager expects good things from his team, "if they keep up their confidence level as we go into regionals and state," he said.
The Bluebirds qualified for state last year with the core of this year's team having that experience.
Several team members agree that their performance at state last year was disappointing and going again would be a chance to redeem that experience.
