GHS netters finish second at tourney

The Goessel High School volleyball team placed second in their own tournament Sept. 13 in Goessel. The team went 3-2 for the day.

In the first match against Wichita Independent, Goessel won 25-23, 26-24.

"This was a big win for us," head coach Sandy Banman said. "We had not played well last Tuesday, so it was great to start the day with a win."

In their match against South Haven, Goessel won the first game, 25-16, lost the second game, 25-23, and won the third game, 15-11.

According to Banman, Allison Banman was the serving leader with 11 serves and four aces.

"Ashley Ensz and Kory Hiebert did very well at the net," she said.

Ensz had nine kills, and Hiebert had eight. Brittany Voth and Brianna Unrau led in digs with five each.

In the match against Collegiate, Goessel lost the first game, 25-22, won the second game, 25-23, but lost the third game, 21-9.

"What a match!" Banman said. "The third game just kept going and going. Even though we lost, that was a huge encouragement for us to stay within a point or two and push the third game so far when it was supposed to stop at 15."

Felicia Goertzen led in digs with five. K. Hiebert and A. Ensz had seven kills each. Allison Banman led in serving 15 for 15 and two aces. Brittany Goerzen was 12 for 13 with two aces.

The team lost to Sedgwick 25-20, 27- 25.

Against Halstead the team won the first game, 25- 22, lost the second, 25-17, and one the third game, 15-6.

According to Banman, Hiebert had a great hitting game. She had 12 hits, eight of them kills.

She said Goertzen had a good defensive game with eight digs.

Results for the tournament were as follows: Sedgwick placed first with a 5-0 record; Goessel, second with a 3-2 record; and Wichita Collegiate, third with a 3-2 record for the day.

"I was so happy with how the girls did," Banman said. "We won the tournament last year, and coming in with such a young and inexperienced team, I just didn't know how we would do."

"I told the girls that they made incredible progress on Saturday," she said. "A lot of time on the court really helped us for the rest of the season. We have a lot to learn, which will come with experience. I'm excited to see what we will do!"

The team's overall record is 4-7. They played Tuesday at home with Burrton, Ell-Saline, and Moundridge.

In the first match against Remington, Goessel lost 25-20, 25-14.

Against Peabody, the team lost 25-19, 25-19.

Against Inman, they lost 25-8, 25-19.
