Gib Rempel

George Gilbert "Gib" Rempel, 79, died Dec. 24, 2003, at Walnut Creek, Calif.

Born Dec. 15, 1924, in Peabody, he was the son of Dietrich Bergman and Tena (Bagenski) Rempel.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a tank driver and worked on rebuilding Okinawa's roads after the war.

After returning to Kansas he worked as a shepherd, farming on the family farm south of Lehigh, and spent some time working in Alaska. He moved to California and continued to work in the construction business.

On Feb. 11, 1957, he married Mary Jane Bryan at Fresno, Calif. The family moved to Walnut Creek in 1964.

He was preceded in death by both parents; three brothers, Abe, Ed, and Dietrich; and five sisters, Nettie Rittel, Tena Olsen, Sarah Nickel, Dorothy Williams, and Margaret Hett Karlowski Adler.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane; three sons, Kenneth Eugene, Norman Leroy, and Dietrich Glenn; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Jan. 3 at Ouimet Bros. Chapel. Burial was in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Gustine, Calif.
