Girl Scout cookies on sale now
The 2004 Girl Scout cookie sale began Wednesday and ends Jan. 26.
Local troops will be out in full force selling cookies to area residents. In the cookie program, the girls learn money management skills by taking orders, setting goals, and distributing the cookies sold.
Local Brownie troops are led by troop leaders, Valerie Hamm of Hillsboro, Troop 94 and Marshelle Bennett of Lehigh, Troop 92.
Cookies offered this year are Thin Mint, Samoa, Tagalong, All About, Trefoils, and Do-Si-Do. Also, two new cookies will be introduced this year. They are Lemon Cooler and Double Dutch.
The Brownies will set up tables to sell cookies at their local sponsors, Emprise Bank and Vogt's Hometown Market.
"We appreciate our local sponsors," said Hamm. Assistants are Diana Howell and Nicole Brouillard.
According to Hamm, the local troop is interested in doing some service projects including planting trees or flowers in conjunction with a Hillsboro beautification project.
Each Brownie who elects to sell cookies can earn "cookie dough" which includes certificates from the Girl Scout Council, 10 percent of her total sales to be applied to Girl Scout events, and prizes. The local Scouts, which is a part of the Girl Scouts Council of the Flint Hills, earn 30 cents per box.
The money the girls earn will help with field trips and participation in creating youth programs for the girls in the Flint Hills.
"We have an incredible group of parents to work with," Hamm said.
The troop is planning a parent appreciation dinner in February.
Any business who would like to have the Brownies sell cookies at their site may call Hamm at 947-2924.
The cookies will be delivered between Feb. 21 and March 6.
