Girls go 1-3 at Canton-Galva tourney
The Trojans were 1-3 Saturday at the Canton-Galva tournament, losing to Little River and Hesston, who finished first and second respectively in the tournament.
In the Little River match, junior Laura Skiles was 11-11 in attacks with five kills and sophomore Jessica Heidel was 9-9 with two kills. Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm led the team in serves, going 9-9 with two aces. Junior Laura Lindsay was 7-7 in serving and senior Emily Ratzlaff, 4-4. The Trojans made 91 percent of their serves in the match. Hillsboro lost both games, 27-25, 25-16.
The Trojans faced the Hesston Swathers in the second match of the tournament, losing 25-23, 25-21.
Chisholm was 8-12 in attacks with five kills and sophomore Tina Frick was 6-8 in attacks with four kills. The Trojans were 43-45 in serving with senior Amy Duerksen serving 11-11 with two aces. Senior Katie Baltzer, Chisholm, Lindsay, and Ratzlaff were all 100 percent in serves and the team made 96 percent of its serves. Duerksen also led the team in passing, 10-10, and was 40-46 in setting with 12 assists.
Match three had the Trojans facing the former team of coach Sandy Arnold, the Canton-Galva Eagles. Hillsboro won in three, 25-16, 13-25, 25-16.
"After losing the first two matches, I was worried about our mental attitude. I didn't know if we could come back to win," Arnold said. "The girls played a tough match."
Chisholm led the team in attacks, going 10-13 with six kills. Ratzlaff was 7-8 in attacks with three kills. Chisholm was 14-15 in serving with three aces and Ratzlaff was 10-11 with two aces. Eight Trojans were 100 percent in passing, with Duerksen leading the team with a match high of 14-14.
The Trojans defeated Marion Tuesday night, 2-0 and 2-1, at Marion.
Hillsboro is at home Tuesday against Halstead for its last regular season games. Game time is at 5 p.m.
