Girls' hoops squad crushes Peabody, survives Ell Saline

The Goessel girls' basketball team opened the season in fine fashion, taking two wins against Ell Saline and Peabody.

The first game of the season opened with the Goessel girls methodically building a lead against Ell Saline in Brookville. Midway through the second quarter, Goessel led 19-6, but the Cardinals finished the half strong. Goessel went into the break trailing 21-15.

The Bluebirds had a 32-21 lead after three quarters. After the first bucket in the fourth quarter, Goessel didn't score for seven minutes. During that time, Ell Saline gradually erased the lead.

With 45 seconds to play, Goessel was ahead 34-33. The Bluebirds hit three of four free throws in the last 11 seconds to ice the game with a final score of 37-33.

Tara Goerzen led all scorers with 14 points. Melinda Stucky added 11; Lindsey Unruh, six first half-points; Carolyn Unruh, four points; and Brittany Goerzen, two free throws.

Against Peabody, the Bluebirds built a 10-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and then gradually extended the lead the rest of the game. Goessel led by 14 at the half, by 12 at the end of three quarters, and won by 28 with a final score of 62-34.

Stucky banked in 22 points; T. Goerzen, 12; Darla Funk, 10; L. Unruh, eight; B. Goerzen, six; and C. Unruh and Becky Schroeder, two each.

The team's record is now 2-0, and they will play Friday and Saturday at Bennington, against Mankato and Minneapolis.
