Girls team downs Canton-Galva, Pretty Prairie

On Tuesday Goessel defeated their closest rival, Canton-Galva, by a score of 62-35.
The Bluebirds could only score nine points in the first quarter, but they held the Eagles to three points.
The second quarter belonged to the senior duo of Melinda Stucky and Tara Goerzen as they combined for 13 of Goessel's 14 points.
Canton-Galva outscored the Bluebirds in the third quarter, but Goessel led 36-28 at the break and then coasted to a 17-point victory.
Scoring for the Bluebirds were Stucky with 24 points, T. Goerzen 19, Candice Bailey five, Becky Schroeder four, Carolyn Unruh three, Jessica Graber and Lindsey Unruh two each, and Darla Funk and Brittany Goerzen, one each.
Shae Steenson led the Eagle scoring with 13, and Ashley Scott scored 12.
Goessel finished league play with an 8-5 record and 12-7 overall.
On Friday, the Goessel girls defeated Pretty Prairie 62-41. Eight Bluebirds scored in the game with several girls getting hot in different quarters.
Tara Goerzen scored eight points in the first quarter, Brittany Goerzen scored six points in the second quarter, and T. Goerzen scored another eight in the third quarter. Candice Bailey led the Bluebirds in scoring in the fourth quarter with all five of her points.
The Bluebirds played solid defense, which created some transition baskets. Goessel led at the breaks 15-10, 29-21, 45-33, and a final of 62-41.
Goessel made 21 of 27 free throws, which helped extend their lead throughout the game.
Stucky was sidelined with foul trouble for much of the second half.
Scoring for the Bluebirds were T. Goerzen with 22 points, L. Unruh with 10, Stucky with nine, B. Goerzen with seven, Bailey and Funk with five each, and Schroeder and C. Unruh with two each.
