The Goessel High School girls' basketball team had trouble breaking away from Canton-Galva in the first half in what appeared to be a turn-over contest before pulling ahead for a 49-36 victory.

Goessel was ahead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and behind 13-12 at the end of the half.

Goessel dominated in the second half behind penetration from their ball handlers and the height of Kory Hiebert. They held a 26-17 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Hiebert banked in 29 points, 17 in the fourth quarter. Candice Bailey scored 12 points; Courtney Berkholz, five; Felecia Goertzen, two; and Sarah Unruh, one.

Last Tuesday, the girls lost 36-22 to Trinity at Hutchinson. Trailing 22-6 at half time, the Bluebirds played even with the Celtics in the second half but couldn't overcome the scrappy defensive team and its 16-point lead.

The Bluebirds travel Jan. 4 to Moundridge.
