Girls win Hesston Quint, boys take fourth
Despite cool, windy weather, the Hillsboro thinclads had some good times Tuesday at the Hesston Quint. The girls finished first with 148 points while the boys finished fourth with 64 points.
"The girls showed their depth," said head coach Dennis Boldt. "Only nine points separated the boys from second place."
According to Boldt, Megan McCarty and Andrea Jost finishing first and second respectively in the javelin was one highlight of the meet. Others were Chelsea Bebermeyer placing third in the shot put; Kelsie Penner placing first in the pole vault; and Tina Frick taking first place in the 100m dash.
"These athletes are providing additional scoring in events which make us a very well rounded team," Boldt said.
For the boys' team, Nate Holmes earned three first place medals.
"We worked the athletes hard through this meet, loading many of them with four events, and they responded well," said Boldt.
The track team will compete at 4 p.m. Friday in the Smoky Valley Invitational at Lindsborg.

Marion
The Hillsboro High School girls' track team finished first April 8 at the Marion Invitational and the boys finished second.
"This was an excellent start to our season," said Boldt. "Both teams had an exceptional day."
Boldt was pleased with the depth the girls' team showed and the competitiveness of the boys' team despite losing 10 seniors from last year's team.
"I think the boys put some doubts to rest today," Boldt said. "Although we have a long way to go, they proved that we will be more than just a competitive team."
Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm set a HHS and Marion Invitational record in the high jump with a jump of 5'9" and finished first in both hurdles races. Sophomore Hannah Marsh placed first in the 100 and 200m dashes and second in the long jump.
According to Boldt, the most encouraging performances came from the middle distance runners. Carrie Schroeder placed second and fifth in the 800m and 1600m. The girls' relay team of Julia Loewen, Samantha Heinrichs, Amanda Faber, and Schroeder placed second in 3200m relay.
"This group of young ladies provided the depth for the girls' team," said Boldt.
Sammy Espada, Tim Funk, and Nate Holmes led the boys' team with first place finishes in the triple jump, high jump, and 800m respectively.
Boldt said the team knew it would have to depend on top three finishes to place highly in invitational meets.
"The boys did this today and should be extremely proud of their effort," Boldt said. "Their performance today really ruled their enthusiasm for the upcoming invitationals."
