Giving and receiving

What should be the role of a community newspaper? Should it stand aloof from the town's residents, spouting out bad news while maintaining its distance?

Or should it be a part of that community, interacting with its residents?

I prefer the latter. A newspaper should be an interactive organization, both giving and receiving news when the circumstances allow.

This week's issue is a good example of that.

On the cover of the paper is a story about an organ sold at the MCC sale. It's an interesting tale of a musical instrument returning home after a 30-year absence.

And the Star-Journal had a part in it. Carol Duerksen and her relatives saw our story, published in March, that discussed the pump organ she and her cousins enjoyed so much as children.

To make a long story short, they bought the organ at the MCC sale, and it's back in the family again. Personally, I'm tickled pink that our humble paper had a part in that.

On page 9 we've got the garage sale directory, which we've compiled after weeks of input from residents around Hillsboro. We hope that it'll be a useful tool for bargain hunters around the county and beyond.

I hope we continue this trend. I hope we're always making our relationship with you, the reader, an important priority. That we're always eager to receive your letters to the editor and story ideas.

So keep 'em coming.
