GJHS A-team ends regular season 10-2 years ago

The Goessel Junior High boys' basketball A-team defeated Remington 34 to 25 Monday at Remington. They ended their regular season 10-2 and will play in the league tournament Feb. 9 through 16.

Tyler Schroeder led the team with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

"We got off to a fast start against Remington and played one of our better games of the season," said Head Coach Dale Wiens.

Goessel hit several three-point attempts early in the game and out rebounded Remington.

"The boys were loose and shooting with confidence," Wiens said. "They also responded well to coaching adjustments."

Other scorers for the team were Justin Fensky with 10 points, Travis Buller with five, and Evan Janzen, Chad Schrag and Kyle Unruh with two points each.

On Feb. 2, the A-team was defeated by Hutchinson Trinity 42-31.

Goessel was down by one point, 20-19, at half time, but a quick surge by Hutchinson early in the second half proved to be the difference in the game. Goessel took good shots and worked hard on defense but found it difficult to penetrate Trinity's zone defense.

According to Wiens, the team had many unforced turnovers, an area in which they will have to improve to advance in the league tournament.

"I commend the entire team for concentrating on rebounding in this game," said Wiens. "This was a focus in practice this past week, and it was evident that everyone make it a priority for this game."

Schroeder led the team with 14 points and six rebounds. Other scorers were Buller with 12 points, Fensky and Unruh with two points each, and Schrag with one.
