GJHS boys defeat Inman

The Goessel Junior High boys' basketball team hosted Inman Jan. 10.

The A-team won 42-41 with Jared Unrau hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"I have nothing but high praise for the boys who never gave up on the game even though we were down by six points with about a minute left to play," said Head Coach Dale Wiens.

"I'm proud of the way the team worked together unselfishly," he said.

Leading scorers for the Bluebirds were Tyler Schroeder with 14 points and Justin Fensky with 10.

Others scoring for the team were Jared Unrau with seven points, Kyle Unruh with five, Travis Buller with four, and Chad Schrag with two.

In the B-team game, Goessel easily defeated Inman 30-17.

The first half, according to Coach Curtis Guhr, was a defensive battle; the second half was an offensive one.

"After half-time, we told the kids to come out and play hard," said Guhr. "To go for the ball, crash the boards, and run the offense, which they did," he said. "We came out and almost doubled our score in the third quarter."

Leading scorers were Buller with eight points and Garrett Hiebert with six. Others scoring for Goessel were Evan Janzen who had four points, Brett Goerzen had three, and Brady Peters, Nathan Amstutz, Nate Holmes, and Jordan Voth had two points each.

The team's record is now 8-0.

The team traveled to Moundridge Jan. 7. The A-team defeated Moundridge 39-25.

Fensky was the leading scorer with 12 points and leading rebounder with eight rebounds.

Schroeder had 11 points and five rebounds followed by Buller who had seven points and five rebounds.

Other scorers were Schrag and Holmes with two points each, Goering, Unrau, Unruh, and Goerzen had one each.

"The first half and second half of this contest looked like completely different games," said Wiens. "We had trouble getting shots to fall . . . we found our rhythm in the second half."

In the B-team game, Goessel won 42-38.

Leading scorers were Amstutz who had eight points and four rebounds, followed by Goerzen and Holmes who had eight points each. Other scorers were Drake with five points, Peters and Buller with four, Goering, Hiebert, and Voth had two each, and Jenkins had one.

"This was the first real test that the B-team has had this year," said Guhr, "and they stepped up to the challenge. Intense defense and great hustle by all earned the B-team their seventh victory."
