Nervous energy kept the eighth grade team sharp during the Junior High Heart of America League Quiz Bowl Tournament.

"It was a very, very good feeling to get first place this year compared to third place last year," eighth grader Katie Flaming commented as she described the championship performance of her team.

Goessel's eighth grade ended up winning four straight matches in pool play and then losing the fifth match to Canton-Galva.

In the semifinal match Goessel defeated Trinity 75-50 and then squeaked past Inman 70-60.

The eighth grade students that participated in the final meet of the season were Travis Duerksen, Katie Flaming, Chris Johnston, Matt Johnston, and Cameron Voth.

The Goessel seventh grade team nearly pulled off a perfect day by sailing through pool play undefeated. Their only loss for the day was in the semi-final game with Central Christian.

An extra question had to be answered to break a tie at the end of regulation, and a Cougar player buzzed in just ahead of a Goessel player to defeat the Bluebirds 70-60.

In the consolation match with Inman, Goessel recovered and won by a score of 110-40 to garnish third place.

Seventh grade students participating for Goessel were Amy Brubaker, Anthony Esau, Austin Unruh, Kristin Unruh, and Kendall Voth.

"Goessel was the only school in the tough 12-team league to place both the seventh and eighth grade teams in the top three," said a delighted coach Bruce Stucky.
