Goertzen photographs shown at Bethel
Photographer Don Goertzen of Newport, Wash., will display his photographs through Oct. 26 in the Fine Arts Center Gallery at Bethel College in North Newton. The exhibit features photographs selected from Goertzen's work as a professional photographer, as well as photographs he took during his college years at Bethel.
A Meet the Photographer public reception was held Saturday, Oct. 4, in the gallery.
Fine Arts Center Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays.
Goertzen was a child in Marion County when he became interested in photography. In grade school he purchased a used 828 roll-film camera. Although the family lived in the country and had no running water and no electricity, he printed his own photos, borrowing the family car battery to power a red safe light and using his mother's glass cake pans as processing trays.
By the time he was a freshman at Bethel College, Goertzen had a Bolsey B2 35 mm camera and knew how to use the college darkroom that was located in the Administration Building basement.
After his 1961 graduation from Bethel College, Goertzen taught industrial arts in Washington State for 20 years. In 1975 he opened Goertzen Photo, a portrait and wedding photography studio in Newport. The exhibit is part of Bethel College's 33rd annual Fall Festival which took place from Oct. 2 to 5.
