Goessel artists shine at league art festival
Goessel High School art students captured several awards April 4 at the HOA League Art Festival at Hutchinson Trinity High School.
In an event in which students from 12 schools competed in 18 categories, Goessel swept the sculpture category, with Travis Duerksen, Brandan Harvey, and David Wiens placing first, second, and third respectively.
Harvey and Anthony Esau, captured first and second in graphic design. Casey Wedel was third in computer-manipulated photography, and Joylin Hall won the students' choice award.
The HOA Festival is more than a contest. Students went to a workshop taught by Brad Anderson, a professor of ceramics and graphic design at Kansas Wesleyan University, and toured the Hutchinson Art Center. Goessel students toured the newly established Garnett Art Glass shop in Buhler to watch a demonstration on glass-blowing.
Goessel students' artwork will be on display in the GHS Emil Kym Art Gallery from now until April 27.
"Our students really came alive with some experimental and innovative artwork this year," said Goessel art instructor Brian Stucky. "I think art fans will be pretty amazed when they see it."
