The Goessel Bluebird football team traveled Friday to Little River for its only Heart of America League game of the season and won 28-12.
Garrett Hiebert broke loose on a 67-yard run for the first Goessel score and Brett Goerzen scampered in from 3 yards for another first-quarter touchdown.
The Bluebirds led 16-0 at the end of the quarter and neither team was able to score again before halftime. Justin Fensky ran 48 yards for a score in the third quarter making it 22-0. Little River was able to score from 3 yards in the third quarter.
Goerzen found the end zone again on a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter. GHS was able to play some of its underclassmen toward the end of the game.
Since there are only two eight-man football teams in the HOA league, the Bluebirds can claim the league championship for the second year in a row.
Goessel will host Cedar Vale Friday and the Bluebird fans will get to try out the new bleachers.
