Goessel Bluebirds fly away with two varsity wins
Staff writer
Peabody-Burns basketball teams lost both varsity matches when they hosted the Goessel Bluebirds. The Warriors just couldn't seem to shake the Bluebirds. The Lady Warriors led most of the game, but couldn't hang on for the win.
A break in the action now, for all teams, extends to the first week in January.
The Warriors started a little slowly with a prepared Bluebird squad. Steven Morgan opened the scoring with a bucket underneath. The Warriors seemed to be one step behind the familiar Goessel team, having played them only three weeks ago.
Behind by six at the end of the first, 12-18, the Warriors battled a hard second quarter exchanging back and forth points with Goessel. Goessel ran a lot of time off the clock, spreading the offense and keeping the ball out of the hands of the Warriors. The Warriors were down by five at the half, 24-29.
A third quarter spurt started with Grant Klingenberg scoring first for the Warriors. The PBHS squad was able to build a five point lead with some impressive fast-break points, but the Bluebirds came back to tie the score with a trey at the two minute mark of the third. The Warriors once again closed the quarter behind, this time 42-48.
Goessel continued its assault from three-point land for the remainder of the game. The Warriors were able to battle back to within three, but couldn't close the gap. The game ended in a Warrior loss, 63-66.

The Lady Warriors, displaying their best team effort of the season, came out ready to play. Aware of a good Goessel press, the Lady Warriors were able to advance the ball and score for the first three quarters.
Andrea Jones opened underneath for two. A low scoring quarter ended in favor of the Lady Warriors, 9-4.
The second quarter pressure from the Bluebirds eased and the Lady Warriors increased the scoring production. At the half, the PBHS squad lead at 24-21.
Scoring continued for the Lady Warriors into the third quarter, but the Bluebirds also started to find the comfort zone. The third quarter still favored the lady Warriors, 37-32.
Dalli Hammond scored the only points for the PBHS team in the fourth quarter. The Lady Warrior offense stalled and the Bluebirds found the basket. The Lady Warriors were defeated by Goessel, 47-39.
"This was the best game we've played all year in the sense of playing hard," stated Coach Washington. "We did many positive things in the first half. Defensively we were aggressive and did a good job against their big guns. The fourth quarter was a nightmare. We didn't seem to gel like the previous three quarters. We will be better as the season goes on. We are competing and I'm proud of that."
