The frigid weather outside matched the shooting of the Bluebirds in the first quarter against the Burrton Chargers.
Burrton jumped ahead 21-11, but the Bluebirds began chipping away at the lead. By half-time the Goessel boys were behind 28-22.
The first seven points of the second half were all Goessels, and they found themselves ahead 29-28 with 6:15 to play in the third period. Goessel still clung to a one-point lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Chargers gradually built a seven point lead in the fourth quarter. With 54 seconds remaining in the game, Burrton led 49-44 but played into Goessel's strategy by missing all free-throws in three trips to the line.
Josh Schmidt hit two free-throws with 33 seconds left to get the Bluebirds within three points, and the home team had several attempts to tie the game, but the ball would not go in the basket.
Burrton won by a final score of 49-46.
Josh Schmidt led the Bluebirds with 16 point. Nicholas Peters added seven; Aaron Stehman, 5; Justin Fensky, Ryan Janzen and Garrett Hiebert, four points each; Jordan Voth and Travis Buller, three points each.
The Bluebirds hit four of four free-throws, while Burrton was five of 16 from the stripe.
Goessel's record drops to 1-6 in the Heart of America League and 4-10 overall.
Both boys and girls played Tuesday at home with Peabody and will play Pretty Prairie on Friday.
